Those rubber ducks and foam letters and numbers sure look cute when they're in the hands of your toddler. But when he's done in the tub and you're putting away the toys, you may notice icky black stuff inside the duck or a slimy substance on the surface of the letters. This can make you wonder just how clean those seemingly harmless playthings are. Fortunately, it's easy to clean bathtub toys, so your child can go back to having fun in the tub and you can relax and enjoy watching her play.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bucket
  • 1 tbsp. bleach or 1 cup white distilled vinegar
  • Damp sponge or cloth
  • Paper towels
Step1
Squeeze excess water from toys and place them in the bucket.
Step2
Fill the bucket with water and add appropriate amount of bleach or vinegar.
Step3
Allow the toys to soak for about 2 minutes. Toys that can hold water, such as rubber ducks, may need to soak longer.
Step4
With a damp sponge or cloth, wipe each toy, then rinse it in water in a sink. Be sure to remove the cleaning solution from ducks and other squeeze toys. Place on a flat surface. Dry toys with paper towel.
Step5
Carefully examine each toy to make sure it is clean. Discard any toys that still have a slimy surface or black (moldy) spots.
Step6
Store clean toys in mesh bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, toys should be cleaned about every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • If possible, buy new bath toys about every 6 months.
  • If using bleach to clean toys, rinse them thoroughly before returning to tub. Harsh chemicals can be very dangerous for youngsters.
