How to be Prepared For a Bushfire

Now that Summer is here, bushfires are a potential threat, particularly in these dry years during drought. Follow these simple steps to ensure that you are prepared for a bushfire.

Instructions

1. 
    
   Clear roof and gutters of leaves, pine needles and any branches

   * If possible, use a mower, rake or spade to make a firebreak around your home, and trim branches well clear of your house

   * Fit wire screens to doors, windows, and vents, and enclose all gaps, roof eaves and the area under your house

   Put a hose (as long as possible) on a rack and attach it to an outside faucet.

   * Fit hoses to reach all parts of the house and garden
   * If town water is not connected, keep tanks full and ensure that pumps are in good working order

   Prepare a first-aid-kit in case of an emergency

   * Store wood, fuel and paints well clear of the house.
   * Decide on a household plan to either leave early or stay to protect your home during a bushfire.

• Discuss your concerns with nearby neighbours
• Listen to the radio in case of a fire in your area
• Have reliable transport available
• Clear the view of your house number so it can be easily seen from the street - this will help the fire department locate your house
• If there is a fire, phone the Fire Service. Don't assume that they know there is a fire
