Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Determine approximately how far you throw on average. Javelins are made to travel at a variety of distances. They range from 50 meter javelins to 80 meter javelins. The difference is in their flexibility. A 50 meter javelin is more flexible so that if thrown at the incorrect angle, the javelin will be less likely to turn or curve in the air. This is the javelin you should choose if you are a beginner.
Step2
An 80 meter javelin will be less flexible and will be more likely to turn in the air if thrown incorrectly. If thrown correctly, however, the 80 meter javelin will fly much farther.
Step3
The next decision is to determine the wind direction on the day of competition.
Javelins are made differently to fly more efficiently in a head wind or a back wind. A head wind javelin is made with slender pointed tip so that it will cut through the wind and the flight will not be affected.
Step4
A tail wind javelin is made with a blunted tip so it will catch the wind underneath it. The wind will actually give lift to the javelin and cause it to fly farther.
