There are several popular writing magazines on the market today and each one offers a little different writing advice. How do you choose the one that's right for you, your writing experience and your interests? Each magazine caters to a specific audience and some may not be appropriate for your specific interests. For example, "Poets & Writers" Magazine caters more directly to poets and prose authors, which you may not find helpful for your writing career.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • List of writing magazines
  • An afternoon to spend at your local bookstore or library
Step1
Identify where you are in your writing career, (beginning, intermediate, advanced) and identify what information you're truly interested in (running a writing business, finding writing markets, writing fiction, writing non-fiction, entering contests). Once you identify your specific interests and needs, you're ready to take a look at the magazines on the market.
Step2
Consider "Writer's Digest." One of most well-known writing magazines, this magazine covers everything from poetry and drama to fiction, non-fiction and everything in between. You'll find market information along with information on the writing life, organizing a writing business and much more. This magazine only comes out every other month and can cater to the beginning or intermediate writer.
Step3
Be aware of "The Writer's Journal." A good magazine for beginners, this magazine includes columns on how to write a variety of types of writing and includes several different contests and contest results every month as well.
Step4
Know about "Byline." This magazine publishes fiction and non-fiction and is a good market for writers looking to publish their work.
