Things You'll Need:
- Round plastic garbage can lid
- Snowy hill
-
Step 1
There should be at least 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground, packed and firm but not icy. It's actually best if snow is still falling, as this gives the already packed snow a nice slick surface for sledding.
-
Step 2
The garbage can lid should be clean, and works best when it is from a 33-gallon can. The child will be sitting on the inside of the lid and holding onto the sides.
-
Step 3
Any hill will do, but it should not be one that is in a high traffic area. Golf course hills are great. We used the hill of our apartment complex because there was so much snow we couldn't drive in or out of it. The hill of a school playground is good too.
-
Step 4
At the top of hill, place the garbage can lid bottom side down in the snow. Sit down in the center of the lid, and gently rock forward until you feel yourself slide, or have a friend push you to get you moving. Then swoosh! You are sledding to the bottom of the hill.
-
Step 5
Once at the bottom, grab the lid and trek back to the top of the hill and repeat the previous steps. When you are too tired and cold to climb up the hill again, go inside for a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows and a cookie.
