You can go to the mall and not spend a fortune. The key is to limit yourself to a budget and enjoy the entire shopping process, not just the thrill of impulse spending.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First and foremost, don't bring credit cards with you when you head to the mall. Allow yourself to bring a cash amount that you can afford.

  2. Step 2

This is a good time to get out any gift cards you may have. If you have any mall restaurant cards, bring them too.

  3. Step 3

Focus on whether you need to hit certain stores (you have a definite purpose) or you just want to follow your fancy (impulse shopping.) Both can be fun and perfectly fine if you set a budget.

  4. Step 4

Once you are at the mall, try to go from one end to the other without buying anything (unless you're purpose-driven and are heading to a particular store.) This makes you thoughtful and keeps you from spending all your money at once.

  5. Step 5

Along your journey, note any stores you'd like to go into. Enjoy the crowds and the sights.

  6. Step 6

When you go into the stores, even if you have gift cards, check out the sale racks. Be wary, though, of buying any sale items that you wouldn't pay full price for.

  7. Step 7

When you are done shopping, use one of your restaurant gift cards or pick an inexpensive lunch joint for a free or budget-friendly meal.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to keep within your budget, avoid shopping with big spenders, because they can break your resolve.
