Things You'll Need:
- G4 laptop
- external monitor
-
Step 1
Try resetting the power management unit. Refer to this support document about resetting the power management unit (pmu). This step may resolve any power issues you might have that could cause a video/lcd issue. This link also has manuals for G4 models.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 -
Step 2
Try connecting an external monitor to your G4 laptop to help determine whether or not you have an LCD issue or a converter issue. If your monitor works it may be an issue with the LCD, if the monitor does not work it could be a bigger issue.
-
Step 3
If all else fails speak to a technician at a local Apple store.

on 1/29/2008 The requested article only asked help for determining which one has an issue. Trying the things listed will tell you which one it is.

on 1/4/2008 From the title, I came here expecting to find a tip on how to determine whether the problem was with your LCD panel, or with your inverter board (i.e., which one needs replacement). Instead, it looks as if this tip only goes so far as to diagnose that the problem is in one of those units, but not which one.
