Step 1
Devote the time, energy, and resources you would devote to any other profession. If writing is going to be your career, then realize that it will take no less effort than any other career choice. Invest in education, seminars, writing clinics and quality equipment.
-
Step 2
Write. Don’t make plans of what you are going to write when you have the opportunity or what you would like to write if only the circumstances were right. Do it full-time. If you can devote five or six 8-hour days to working in the mall, consider and commit to a work schedule for building your writing career.
-
Step 3
Keep a journal. All good writers should have a journal or a thought book. This is a place where you can analyze, interpret, and comment on what you have seen, heard, or thought.
-
Step 4
Be a reader. Innumerable successful writers have stressed the importance of good reading habits. Not only do you need to read a lot of the genre you want to write in, you also need to read a lot of everything else: books, magazines, labels, billboards, newsletters, blogs, everything.
-
Step 5
Don’t be a real life bore. Experience. Flat people make flat writers. If you want to spice up your writing, spice up your life. Don’t try to be a recluse and expect an adventurous voice to emerge from your pages.
-
Step 6
Network and promote. As in any other field, your level of skill does not always determine your success. Some things happen because you know the right people or the right time. Participate in book and writing clubs or online forums. Furthermore, be confident and tell people what you do.
