Kids love hamburgers! Now, you can feed your kids hamburgers without the grease, and even with added nutrition. Here is a foolproof plan to make healthy hamburgers your kids will eat.
Choose a lean cut of meat. Opt for turkey burger or ostrich meat, which are lower in fat. Although turkey has a definite different taste, many people don’t even know they are eating ostrich in comparison with beef. It has the same texture and quality. If you do purchase beef, choose a lean cut. It has far less fat.
Step2
Add dehydrated veggies. Dehydrate tomatoes, carrots and spinach in a dehydrator. If you crush the vegetables up into flakes, you can easily put it into the meat when you are making patties. In small flakes they are nearly invisible and have no taste. Your children won’t even know they are getting a serving of vegetables.
Step3
Cook your burger on a fat reducing grill that drains fat or with a light coat of olive oil in the pan. I prefer the later method because the burger maintains some of its juices. A dry burger with no taste won’t win points with your children.
Step4
Use low fat cheese. As opposed to non-fat cheese, which is ridden with extra chemicals, doesn’t melt correctly, and has little taste; low fat cheese melts and is still full of flavor. Choose cheese made from 2% milk versus whole.
Step5
Lay out an array of toppings. Dice tomatoes, pickles, onions and lettuce. Although your children may opt for only ketchup and mustard, the array of veggies may incline them to give it a try.
Step6
Use whole-wheat buns. With an array of flavors, you can find whole-wheat buns now that have the same texture as white buns. Even the pickiest kids won’t be able to detect the difference if you find a kind that works. Make sure they are soft and don’t have oats or wheat on the top unless your child enjoys heartier breads.
Step7
Make the tasty sides! What are hamburgers without French Fries? Cut your own potatoes into thin strips, coat them with a little olive oil and salt and bake them in the oven at about 400 degrees until crisp. Try sweet potato fries for variety and extra vitamins!
