Each soldier has a permanent record which is used for many purposes. This record is the DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • The Veterans permission.

Step1
If you are an employer or know the person simply ask to see a copy of their DD 214. Only officials in government positions at the Veterans office or military posts can obtain such information, as authorized by US government.
Step2
The DD 214 is a confidential document of a soldier' s history and must be safeguarded. Remember, everyone has a right to privacy. It may be considered discrimination if you do not hire someone besause they refuse to offer such information.
Step3
After obtaining the document. Look at Block 24, at the bottom right hand side of document for the type of discharge.
Step4
If you have lost your DD 241 or are next of kin to a deceased Veteran, you can obtain a copy of their DD 214 by visiting the National Personnel Records Center online. Follow their instructions.
