Transferring a domain name from Tucows to eNom involves several tasks at both registrars: freeing up the domain at Tucows, creating a transfer request at eNom, and confirming that it's you (not a hijacker) who wants the transfer. This how-to guides you step-by-step through the process.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A domain registered at Tucows
  • Your login and password for your Tucows account
  • Login and password information for your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or BulkRegister
  1. Step 1

Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer -- that is, that the name has been registered for at least 60 days, is not expired, and is not in "client update prohibited" status.

  2. Step 2

Since the transfer process is done by email, the Registrant and Administrative email addresses associated with the domain name must be correct.

To make sure they are, begin by logging on to your domain at https://manage.opensrs.net.

  3. Step 3

    Click "Manage Domain".

  4. Step 4

Type in any needed updates to the domain contact information, and save.

  5. Step 5

The next task is obtaining the authorization code.

In the "Manage Domain" page, find the "Domain Extras" section. The authorization code appears there. Record it to supply when you submit your transfer request.

  6. Step 6

Unlock the domain name by contacting Tucows (or the Tucows reseller you work with) and asking them to unlock the domain name.

  7. Step 7

Now you're ready to create the transfer request at eNom.

  8. Step 8

Log on to your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or BulkRegister.

  9. Step 9

In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".

  10. Step 10

In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".

  11. Step 11

Select "Auto verification" and click "next".

  12. Step 12

Type in the domain name you want to transfer, a comma, a space, and then the authorization code. If you have more domains, hit "Enter" and type in the information for the next domain on a new line. Repeat for each domain you're transferring, one per line.

  13. Step 13

Set the Registrar Lock, Auto-Renew, Whois, and Password options as you wish.

  14. Step 14

    Click "next".

  15. Step 15

    Click "submit".

  16. Step 16

When you (or the Whois contacts listed at Network Solutions) receive the email from eNom asking for approval of the transfer, do so by following the instructions in the email.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are a few unscrupulous businesses that "hijack" names -- transfer unlocked domains to themselves, effectively stealing them. Once you unlock your name, it's advisable to submit the transfer request at eNom quickly, to reduce the time window for any potential hijackers.
  • Make sure the transfer email that you approve is eNom's, not from one of these hijackers!
