Lack of storage in an apartment is the number one complaint of renters. With a little creativity and organization, you can make the best of your living situation. Here are some suggestions to optimize apartment storage space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Under bed storage containers
  • Shoe and clothes organizers
  • End tables with storage
  • Wicker Baskets
  1. Step 1

Store your items according to size. Put large items on large shelves and small items on small shelves. Although it seems like common sense, most people lose valuable storage because they don't store items in the proper places.

  2. Step 2

Buy self-standing storage space. Choose an entertainment center that lies flat against the wall. You can store your television, DVD player, VCR, gaming systems, videos, DVDs and CDs.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a standing shower rack with five shelves. You can store all your shower items plus back ups. Outside of the shower, purchase a standing cabinet to store linens, and additional toiletries.

  4. Step 4

Use under bed storage containers. By jamming items under your bed you lose space and organization. Pick up a clear storage container that will slide directly under your bed. Several will fit under your bed and you can store seasonal items, clothes, linens and even kitchen items underneath.

  5. Step 5

Choose end tables with closing cupboards. By using an end table for storage you won't lose valuable storage space as you would with a regular end table. Store books, knitting, magazines, CDs or pictures beneath to keep your living space clutter free. If you have an end table with an open bottom, pick up a fancy wicker basket or a decorated cardboard box to slide underneath.

  6. Step 6

Optimize closet space. Most bedroom closets have one rack on top, which leaves the entire bottom portion useless. Install a rack midway down for shirts. Use racks or hanging organizers to fold jeans or sweaters. A hanging shoe organizer on the back of your closet door will store about 24 pairs of shoes and keep your closet floor free to stick a vacuum.

  7. Step 7

Have a catch-all basket. Most apartments seem small because of excess items lying around. Although a few magazines, books or remote controls aren't necessarily messy, they can leave a small space feeling cluttered. Have a nice wicker basket in the corner in which you can throw random items. Toss a folded throw blanket on top when you have company and no one will ever know the difference.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hide your clutter to make any room seem larger.
