How to Optimize Kitchen Counter Space

Lack of counter space is one of the top complaints for many cooks. If you find you have limited counter space in your kitchen, there are a few tricks that can make your work area seem larger.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Organizational Items
  • Corkboard
  • Mobile Workstation
Step1
Put all the items that you don’t use daily away. If you only use your sandwich maker once a week, find a shelf in the pantry for it. It’s senseless to keep a bread maker or popcorn machine in the middle of your workstation if you only use it once in a blue moon.
Step2
Keep your counter tidy. A clean counter seems larger than it is. Excess food and packages makes a small space seem smaller. Keep your food stored in the proper drawer or cupboard. Don’t pile mail or paperwork on your counter.
Step3
Mop up spills and crumbs. You will be amazed at how much more spacious your counters feel when they are clean.
Step4
Use organizational tools. If you don’t have a lot of room in your cupboards, buy a holder to hang mugs on. Purchase an over-the-stove hanger for pots and utensils. If you use spices a lot, opt for a spice rack that stands erect against your wall versus a bulkier version.
Step5
Use your wall space. Most people don’t think of the walls as workspace. Instead of hanging a piece of artwork, hang corkboard to tack recipes or notes. Install a shelf to put your toaster or coffee maker. By installing a shelf over your stove you can organize all your cookbooks and keep them off your counters.
Step6
Purchase a butchers block or mobile workstation. Purchase a station that has storage space beneath in which you can store items like roasters or crock-pots and has extensions for the top to make a larger work area. These mobile units can serve as an island in a larger kitchen and be pushed to the side to serve as an extension for your counter or a side table in the corner of your kitchen.
