The holidays are a time when students and teachers alike look forward to the celebrations, but in a diversified setting like the public school system, addressing several different beliefs can be a task. Here are ways to celebrate the various holidays in an unoffensive manner.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Holiday pictures
  • Fishbowl
  • Digital recording device
  • Available dining area

Step1
Focus on elements that are common to all celebrations in the holidays such as family, giving and love.
Step2
Decorate your classroom in colors representative of all the celebrations. Using only one set of colors subconsciouly excludes the other celebrations.
Step3
Assign each student a celebration to present ceremoniously. Allow them to choose a random celebration from a fishbowl to research and give a presentation to the class. Tell the students to approach it as a cultural belief and not the absolute truth.
Step4
Create a radio show that reports on news from every winter holiday around the world. Play diverse music that is representative of each type of celebration. Broadcast your show on a class webpage for the community and school.
Step5
Allow students to bring in paraphernelia, such as food, candles, and stories associated with their holidays, and have a holiday dinner the day before the winter break begins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Send a letter to inform parents of the upcoming lessons. Allow alternate lessons if there are any discrepancies.
