How to Make a Duct Tape Wallet

This is a great craft project using materials from around the house to create something useful--in this case, a wallet. Duct tape wallets are also perfect activities for summer camps or after school programs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Duct tape

Step1
Pull 6 strips of duct tape off the roll. Each strip should be about 12 to 16 inches long.
Step2
With each strip sticky side up on the table, gently overlap the strips onto one another (the overlap should be about half an inch) long ways so you have one big rectangle of duct tape. Create another rectangle in this same fashion, as close to the same size as you can, and place it on top of the original rectangle with the sticky sides stuck to one another. You should now have a big rectangle of duct tape with the darker side exposed on each side of the rectangle.
Step3
Fold the rectangle and trim it so that it is approximately the size of a regular wallet when it is completely open. Some wallets fold into thirds, some in half, so create it the way you would like. Once you have the size right, use two more pieces of tape to tape off the ends of the wallet, making it one big pocket.
Step4
This is where you can get creative. The wallet at this point will hold your dollar bills, but if you want it to hold credit cards and a drivers license, the easiest way is to create more strips of duct tape with the sticky sides unexposed and tape them into the wallet, staggered enough to hold credit cards. As for the driver's license, create a small rectangle of duct tape (a little bit bigger than the license) and cut out the middle of the rectangle, leaving just the frame. If you have a piece of plastic to tape in the middle, it will work great as the window to see the license. Once the license holder is taped into the wallet, simply slide the license in.

Tips & Warnings

  • The smell of duct tape can be a bit powerful if you spend too much time around it. If you're making multiple duct tape wallets, be sure to take a break every now and again.
