How to Fix Southern Yellow Cornbread

Cornbread is an old standby in the south, where this dish is served with greens or beans. You can use cornbread to economically stretch your meals.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 cups of yellow corn meal
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 cups of buttermilk
  • 4 eggs (separated)
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 4 tbs. baking power
  • 2 tbs. butter
  • Large cake pan or casserole dish
  • Large wooden spoon
  • Cooking oil
  • Large bowl
  • Small bowl
  • Measuring cup
  1. Step 1

    Heat your oven to 400 degrees. Separate your 4 eggs, and put the egg whites in a separate bowl. Beat the egg yolks, put them aside. Beat the egg whites until they are stiff.

  2. Step 2

    Mix 2 cups of water and buttermilk in a saucepan. Slowly add the cornmeal and mix well. Cook on the range at a medium temperature for about 5 to 10 minutes. Stir the mixture as it is cooking.

  3. Step 3

    Add the baking powder, salt, butter, egg whites and yolks to the mixture cooking on the stove. Mix the ingredients well.

  4. Step 4

    Pour yellow cornmeal mixture into the pan or a casserole dish. Bake at about 300 to 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. Let it cool. Cut the squares into 10 to 12 servings.
