The MTA Transit Museum in Brooklyn is one of the most underrated museums in New York City. Underrated, perhaps, because most tourists have no idea it exists. It is an overlooked gem among the many museums the city has to offer.

From Quick Guide: Public Transportation Toolkit
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • MTA transit map
  • $5 entrance fee
  1. Step 1

Get there. The MTA Transit Museum is located in an old subway station next to Borough Hall in Brooklyn. You can reach Borough Hall by subway or bus route. Check your transit map for details.

  2. Step 2

Enter at the corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street, behind Borough Hall. The museum is located in an old, circa-1936 subway station, so it is underground. Enter by walking down the steps in the sidewalk, just like you would any subway station.

  3. Step 3

Step into a time machine that takes you to a bygone era in New York history. The station is filled with old subway cars that still look as they did back-in-the-day, as well as old signs, mosaics that used to decorate the stations, old turnstiles and many interactive and informative exhibits about the history of public transportation, especially as it pertains to New York City.

  4. Step 4

Preview the museum's annex gallery with changing exhibitions, located in Grand Central Station in Manhattan. Both the museum and the annex have a popular gift store that sells unique MTA merchandise that is a step above the usual gift shop fare.

Tips & Warnings
  • Children and Seniors get in for only $3, seniors for free on Wednesdays.
  • Museum members always get in for free.
  • Admission to the Gallery Annex in Grand Central Station is always free.
  • The museum is closed every Monday and on major holidays.

on 1/21/2008 I will have to check this out if I ever get out that way. My son loves trains and wants to ride on the subway some day. What a wonderful place to go after or before their first subway ride.
