The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most stunning and beautiful destinations. Bordered by the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and steep cliffs on the other, the views are intoxicating. It’s hard to say what’s most memorable, the pastel-colored houses perched one atop another on the mountainsides or the alluring isle of Capri off in the distance, or the stunning emerald and azure mosaic tiles adorning church domes, but visiting this region is a feast for the senses that’s not quickly forgotten.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you have the money and can book far enough in advance, secure a hotel room with a private balcony and a water view. There’s nothing like waking up in the morning and walking out onto a bougainvillea covered terrace overlooking shimmering gulf. As you stand there absorbing the view, the scents and sounds of life migrate up from below, voices speaking in Italian, the crash of waves far below, the gentle, clinking of silverware and tea cups, the smell of fresh coffee brewing. Waking up this way is a rare treat that’s not to be missed.

  2. Step 2

Rent a moped. This is hands-down the best way to get around and do in-depth exploration of the many charming villages that dot the coast. A moped lets you dart in and out of villages, stopping where you want to with ease, without the hassle of worrying about parking a car. Two bustling and particularly colorful villages not to be missed on any Amalfi Coast moped tour include Amalfi and Positano.

  3. Step 3

Stop for a swim and fresh grilled fish at Lido Capo Di Conca, which is about 4 kilometers outside Amalfi. This is a special treat, as many of the beaches along the coast are rocky and not all that comfortable to walk on, but at Lido Capo Di Conca you’ll find the perfect solution--a facility providing a dock, diving boards, chaise lounges and umbrellas. Towels and showers are also available. You can easily while away the day here diving in and out of the water, soaking up the sun and when you’re hungry, dining at the facility’s incredibly affordable, but delicious family run restaurant.

  4. Step 4

Visit the Amalfi Cathedral. In addition to providing a cool respite from the sunny outdoors, this cathedral’s claim to fame is that it houses the skull and a few bones belonging to St. Andrew, who was Jesus’ first disciple. Now there’s something to talk about when you return home!

  5. Step 5

Don’t miss the views from Ravello. While it’s a steep ride on your moped to this mountaintop village, it is definitely worth the trip. Visiting Ravello will give you a true sense of the different types of communities lining the Amalfi Coast. Ravello is much different from its busy neighbors, almost resembling a town in the Swiss Alps in terms of architecture and quiet tree-lined streets. Jackie Kennedy dined here and Gore Vidal lived here for many years.
