How to Find a Free Math Tutor

How to Find a Free Math Tutor thumbnail
You can get free help with math.

If you're boggled by sines vs. cosines, the speed at which two trains travel, or any other math conundrum, you're probably in need of a little tutoring. Finding math homework help can be difficult -- particularly if you are on a limited budget. Fortunately, there is a wealth of information available if you know where to look. Between volunteer organizations, online resources and school sponsored after-school tutoring, you should be able to find the extra help you need.

Start in the classroom, then expand your search. Your math teacher may be willing to meet with you at lunchtime or after school. Even if he isn't, he might know people in the school or community who are. Also, if you have friends in the class who understand math well, they may be willing to tutor you.

Talk to your principal or guidance counselor. Many schools have homework help or tutoring programs. You can also ask if your school is a Title I school. Under the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, Title I schools have to provide free tutoring.

Use your own resources and connections. You might have a parent, older sibling or family friend who is good at math.

    • 4

Contact volunteer organizations in your community; some may offer free math tutoring -- particularly if you live in a poorer neighborhood. Church groups, peer mentoring organizations and civic groups also sometimes offer free tutoring.

Ask a librarian. Municipal libraries often have free tutoring programs that include math help. Even if she is unfamiliar with any programs, a librarian might have good advice about where to look next.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't find a tutor right away, use other online resources until you can. There are plenty of free math tutorials and worksheets available on the Internet.

  • It can be easier to find a peer tutor if you have a skill you can trade. For example, if you have strong English skills, you can tutor another student in that while he tutors you in math.
