How to Use Machineguns in Call of Duty 4
Unlike previous Call of Duty games, Call of Duty 4 allows you the opportunity to carry around a Squad Automatic Weapon or SAW, consisting of either an American M249 or a Russian PKG. Using these is a lot different from using the fixed emplacement guns in previous games and there are a few things you should know that may save you.

1
Always aim down the sights. Both machineguns are horribly inaccurate if you aren't aiming down the sights. The only time you'll want to use one without aiming down the sights is if your enemy is right in front of you (<2 meters away.)
-
2
Clear a small area before you reload. If your machinegun is about to run dry, use your other weapon to clear the local area before attempting to reload. The last thing you want is to get stuck in an ambush with an empty machinegun.

3
Reload from behind hard cover. These guns take a very long time to reload when compared to any other gun. Make sure you're behind something very hard and very solid before you attempt to reload.
-
4
Be careful with your ammo. Reloads for the PKG are rare, reloads for the M249 are almost non-existent. If you'd like to keep a machinegun with you, make sure you make every shot count.
-
5
Use short bursts of fire. Extended firing with a machinegun will not only burn ammo quickly, it will reduce your accuracy to almost nothing. Short bursts ensure a fair number of hits and a longer weapon lifespan.

Tips & Warnings
Ditch a machinegun if your current mission is time-sensitive. The last thing you'll want is to waste time reloading a machinegun. Use a rifle or SMG instead.
