How you hang vlevet clothing will affect how it looks the next time you wear it.
Step2
When buying pant/skirt hangers look for ones that have adjustable clips, this way you can slide the clips to the proper distance, avoiding stretching your clothing. Also make sure to pick hangers that don't have teeth on the clips as these can peirce your clothing. Wooden pant hangers that clamp or hangers that have a slide lock on the top of the clips (commonly found on retail store hangers) may apply to much pressure and leave marks.
Step3
My favorite are metal hangers with rubber tipped spring tension clamps. With velvet pants I place small squares of foam in the clamps to soften them and then hang the pants from the hem. Hanging velvet pants by the hem keeps the grain from being pulled in the wrong direction at the clamps. The weight of the pants will pull at the clamps slightly and if hung from the waist some of the fibers may lift a bit until they are washed again.
Step4
Skirts are a little tricky as they are often fuller at the bottom then the waist. I may take and fold the skirt in half down the length of it and then place in the hanger the same as I would for pants. If this is not feasible due to the style of skirt I will turn inside out before hanging the skirt from the waist.
Tips & Warnings
Foam squares in the hangers also work well to keep satins and silks from slipping as easily.
Make sure that the foam you use is clean as well as oil, fragrance and dye free. If you are not able to find any ask your dry cleaner to sell you some from their stock.
