Train Your Dog Not to Urinate on the AC Unit

Many dog owners complain of their dogs peeing on the AC unit. This nasty habit can easily ruin your AC unit over time. The acid in the dog's urine eats away at the metal housing of the unit, causing it to rust and deteriorate much faster. Break your dog of this habit by employing the following methods.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog urination repellant spray
  • Dog urination attraction spikes
  1. Step 1

Purchase the supplies. A trip to a local pet supply store will provide you with all of the necessary supplies.

  2. Step 2

Install the urine attraction spikes in your yard. Follow the instructions on the packaging and install the recommended amount of the urination attraction spikes around the yard.

  3. Step 3

Spray the exterior of the AC unit with the dog urine repellant spray. Follow the instructions on the packaging and saturate the exterior around your AC unit.

  4. Step 4

Catch them in the act. Try and sneak up on them and catch them in the act of peeing on the AC unit.

  5. Step 5

Discipline them. Lightly grab their scruff or collar with one hand and firmly scold the animal. Say "No, bad dog, we don't pee here!" Then take them to one of the dog urination attraction spikes and tell them to pee there. Do not allow them to come inside until they have peed near the dog urination attraction spikes.

  6. Step 6

Repeat until you see success. Over time your dog will eventually associate where they can and can not pee. The best results are seen when you start this process with puppies.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set plastic chairs around the AC unit. As a last resort to get your dog to stop peeing on the AC unit, you can buy cheap plastic outdoor chairs and strategically position them around your AC unit. Make sure to saturate them with the dog urine repellant spray. Also make sure to discipline your dog when they attempt to pee on the chairs.
  • Never use extreme physical force to discipline your dog. They are very smart animals and can easily learn not to do something over time and through the proper methods.
