Things You'll Need:
- Internet access
- Cologne store or counter
-
Step 1
A great way to shop for cologne is via the Internet. There are plenty of websites dedicated solely to cologne and perfume and specialty sections on department store websites, as well. Be sure to read product descriptions and choose a scent that matches your taste. If you hate musky cologne, for instance, you'll want to know what ingredients to avoid.
-
Step 2
Look for product recommendations. If you love Calvin Klein Eternity, for example, look for similar colognes recommended to you. Chances are, share the same ingredients with a twist on a scent you know you already love.
-
Step 3
When at a perfume or cologne store, spray cologne on sample tabs provided. After one brisk spray, wave the paper wand in the air to dry and then softly inhale. Allow for your nose to clear at least a few minutes between sampling the cologne.
-
Step 4
Realize that while one cologne may smell great on a friend of yours, it may have a completely different scent on you. Your skin and body makeup react differently than everyone else's, which may cause the cologne to take on a new form on you.
-
Step 5
Consider price. Many high-end colognes come with hefty price tags. This is just a fact of the matter. If you cannot stand the thought of throwing down nearly $100 for a bottle, consider trying a discount perfume store. Though you may only have access to last season's scents, you may still love the smell.
-
Step 6
Have a scent for day and one for night. What works at the club may not be right for your office, since you sit so close to other employees. Find a cologne that is light, yet fresh for on-the-job wear, and a deeper, more sensual scent for your nights out on the town.
-
Step 7
If you don't like the smell of cologne, opt for a scented aftershave or lotion. Cologne brands often make both of these alternatives and they are usually softer on the senses.
