Have you written a nonfiction book? Would you like to know your options for getting that published? These are various ways to get that story into the public.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • writing knowledge
Step1
Self Publishing is one way. This is typically the last resort after you have exhausted all other options. Try traditional publishers first, then epublishers, then if that fails self-publish it. Self publishers that are more author friendly are places like lulu.com. They have an easy interface that will walk you through everything from setting the price, to cover art. Nonfiction books that really have a niche market do well here, ones that don't have a widespread market.
Step2
Epublishing is another way to get a historical published. Epublishers will "publish" your story in ebook format, which is portable and easy to get to customers. All you need is a computer or ebook reader. Most will take your story in HTML or PDF format. Either they or you will set the price of it. You will typically get good royalties from ebooks, although sales may flounder if you aren't good at promotion. Booklocker is a good place to start.
Step3
Traditional nonfiction markets are going to want a completely polished manuscript. Make sure you have beta readers (people that will read your manuscript and edit or suggest places where it isn't perfect) that will help you. Make sure you have double checked your facts. You should query literary agents if you want to try and get published by the bigger New York publishers. On some nonfiction topics, the university presses are a good fit. Make sure you research all your options at this end.
