How to Plan a Kids Movie Night

Having a movie night with the kids can be a great way to have family time but can be a bit tricky to make it fun for the kids. Just putting in a movie and all sitting down isn’t a movie night, plan it as if you were going to the movies. Make the kids feel like it’s a special night and have fun with it. Sometimes it’s even fun to have the full element of surprise.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Kid's movie
  • Seating for everyone or blankets and pillows
  • Popcorn or other snacks
  • Soda or parental approved beverage
  • Optional: small white Christmas lights
Step1
First of course is to pick out the movie. Trying to get a movie that all the kids will enjoy can be a bit difficult depending on the age of your kids and their likings but with all the movies that keep coming out you should be able to find one.
Step2
Next to get the seating set up. Depending on how old your kids are depends a bit on how you may want to set up. For younger kids you may want to put blankets and pillows on the floor, this make it easy for them to have their own place and they can stretch out and get comfortable. For older kids try setting up all the furniture so that they can all have a “front row seat” this is fairly easily done by curving your furniture in a curved line.
Step3
Next get the snacks and beverages ready. Keep the snacks simple-popcorn, snack mix, chips, granola bars-you don’t want to be tired out. For younger kids cups with tops work well in case they get tipped over, this is another great reason for the pillows and the blankets on the floor.
Step4
Once the seating and snacks are complete you can set the mood. Turn down the lighting in the room so the room is darker but that the kids can still get up and move through the room safely. This is where the Christmas lights come in-string them around the room to create soft lighting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep it simple for the younger kids, it keeps them interested in it more if there are fewer distractions from the movie.
  • Try to get a movie that the family hasn’t seen yet, this makes the movie unique because no one knows the movie. It’s great to rent a newly released movie that the kids have been waiting and wanting to see.
  • The Christmas lights can be string up along the side of the room or the floor (taped down and out of the way so that no one will trip on then) to look like the sides of the theater.
