Step 1
Sign your young Saint up for a puppy category in an upcoming AKC (American Kennel Club) dog show. He must be at least 6 months old. The AKC provides an extensive list of all certified shows. (See Resources)
-
Step 2
Seek out a dog show that is only for Saint Bernards or one that allows dogs of all breeds to enter. Specialty shows are sometimes hard to find, so consider giving your Saint some well-needed experience in shows with all breeds first. When he wins enough times, you can find shows for Saint Bernards only.
-
Step 3
Hire a professional handler for your Saint if you feel you cannot show him well. In the show ring, the handler must maneuver the dog in specific patterns and hold them correctly. With training, you can do this if you choose; otherwise, inquire at your local dog club for a handler.
-
Step 4
Enroll your dog in the appropriate category; Puppy Class is for dogs under 12 months that are not champions. Novice Class is for dogs over 6 months old without champion status. Categories exist for owners who are breeders and for dogs bred in the United States. In addition, an Open Class is for any dog registered with the AKC.
-
Step 5
Familiarize yourself with the awards. As the above classes compete, their winners will go on to compete in special categories. Best of Breed is for the dog that scores highest in his particular breed at the show. Best of Winners goes to the best female and best male in a breed. Best of Opposite Sex goes to the alternate male or female of the Best of Breed winner.
-
Step 6
Watch for the crowning moment of any dog show; the presentation of Best in Show that is awarded to the top dog in conformation of the entire show at the end of the day.
-
Step 7
Take a picture with your Saint when he receives his ribbon. All dogs who win a category receive with a ribbon and a professional photographer will be on hand to photograph your dog, the judge and you, all together with his award. Make sure you purchase this photo; it is a record of your dog’s win.
