A warm scarf can make all the difference on a cold day, and it's easy to knit one in a day. Even a beginner can do this project. Just take your yarn and needles and sit by the fire with a pot of tea. You'll be done before you know it! It can keep you warm on a cold, windy day, and it makes a heartwarming gift as well.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 Pair knitting needles, size 8
  • 8 ounces of 4-ply knitting yarn
  • A piece of cardboard 4 inches wide (optional)
Step1
Cast on 60 stitches.
Step2
Knit four rows. This produces four rows of straight garter stitch.
Step3
Knit the fifth row with one difference; instead of wrapping the yarn around the needles once, wrap it three times. Continue in this way until you finish the row.
Step4
Knit the sixth row, letting the extra yarn drop down to form a long row in between the needles and the garter stitch section.
Step5
Continue Steps 2 through 4 until scarf is as long as you like it. End with 4 rows of garter stitch.
Step6
Cast off in the normal way.
Step7
Wrap yarn around the cardboard 240 times, then cut. Clip along one side of the cardboard to produce 240 8-inch strands of yarn. Loop two of these strands through each stitch at both ends of the scarf to make a fringe.

Tips & Warnings

  • This size needles and yarn should produce 4 stitches per inch. Knit a small sample piece to check your gauge before you start.
