How to Wear Foundation

How to Wear Foundation thumbnail
Use foundation to hide blemishes and get a flawless look.

Foundation makeup can be tricky. A shade that's too dark gives you an orange, masked look. A shade that's too light gives you an unnatural, ashen appearance. Choosing the wrong shade of foundation can leave you looking foolish instead of finished. Take your time selecting the correct shade and you'll look pretty and polished. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

The skin on the inside of your wrist most closely matches the skin on your neck. Use this area to test the color of the makeup. The foundation should blend seamlessly with your natural color.

    • 2

Give your foundation time to set. Wait a few minutes after the application to see its true color.

    • 3

Choosing the right foundation for your skin type is just as important as selecting the right color. There are many options, including liquid, liquid to powder, powder, sheer and pancake. Look for the right formula for your skin type and right amount of coverage to even out your skin tone without looking or feeling heavy.

Check the result under different types of lighting, including natural light. Often, bad store lighting distorts the color and gives you a false idea of the color.

    • 5

Blend the foundation evenly on your face. Rub it in around your hair- and jawline to avoid a masked look. Apply concealer or a little extra foundation to hide under-eye circles and other imperfections.

Tips & Warnings

  • To thin out heavy foundation, moisten your applicator before applying. This gives the foundation a lighter effect.
