Holiday card placemats are festive and they preserve the memories of holidays gone by. Making them is easy with a little cutting and positioning. This craft project works great for any holiday where you have saved greeting cards, or you can use new cards.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Contact paper to make 2 to 8 or more placemats. Each mat will measure approximately 14 by 20 inches, and will have contact paper on both front and back
  • Holiday cards (Christmas, Chanukah, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter and other holidays)
  • Scissors, an exacto knife or a paper cutter
  • A ruler or T-square
  • Glue stick (clear drying)
  • Construction paper pieces that are at least 18 by 12 inches in size (one piece per mat)
  1. Step 1

Collect holiday cards for the placemats you will be creating (enough to crop and cut to fit the number of mats you're making.) Estimate about 8 cards per mat.

  2. Step 2

Remove the card backs with scissors to keep the mats thin.

  3. Step 3

Place construction paper that is 12 by 18 inches on a piece of contact paper which is 14 by 20 inches. Carefully center the paper because it will stick immediately to the contact paper. The construction paper will be visible on the "down side" of the placemat, so select colors that go with the holiday.

  4. Step 4

Glue holiday cards to the piece of construction paper. You can crop the cards, overlap them for a patchwork effect, or have the construction paper visible between the cards.

  5. Step 5

Carefully place a piece of 14 by 20 inch contact paper over the cards. Start at one corner of the mat and slowly seal the cards to the construction paper.

  6. Step 6

Match up the contact paper edges, which will give the mats a 1 to 2 inch border. If you feel clumsy, you can cut the contact paper larger, then trim the borders down once the mat is sealed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit your local craft store to buy contact paper. Sometimes this product is referred to by another name. Tell a sales person that the paper needs to be clear and adhesive.
  • Using a T-square or ruler can help you make straight edges for the construction and contact paper.
