Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 large apples
  • Apple corer or knife
  • Apple peeler
  • 2 quart bowl
  • Lemon juice
  • Water
  • Dehydrator
  • Whole milk
  • Wide mouthed jar or bowl with a lid
  • 1 banana or a quarter cup of raisins (optional)
  1. Step 1

Buy organic apples from your favorite farmers’ market or store.

  2. Step 2

Wash and peel the apples. Cut out the core of the apple with a corer or knife.

  3. Step 3

Cut the apple up into slices of about one-eighth to one-quarter inch thick and place them in a bowl. Sprinkle a little lemon juice, mixed with water, on the apples to keep them from turning brown.

  4. Step 4

Place the apples in your dehydrator in single layers on the shelves. There should be no overlapping. Set the dehydrator temperature to 150 degrees. It will take about 8 to 12 hours for the apples to dry out. As the apples dry, the natural sugar, called fructose, becomes more concentrated.

  5. Step 5

Remove the apples from the dehydrator once they are dry. They should be hard and crisp. Take each slice in hand and crumble it into cereal-sized pieces. Place these pieces into a storage jar or bowl.

  6. Step 6

Pour out some of your cereal into a serving bowl. Add whole milk. The natural sugar in the apples and whole milk makes for a wonderfully sweet breakfast treat. If you like your cereal sweeter, slice up a banana or add some raisins. Organic dried apple cereal is a wonderful breakfast treat for the cereal lover in your family.

Tips & Warnings
  • In step 3, use the lemon juice undiluted for a tangy sweet and sour breakfast treat.
  • Make more than you need for one meal so that you'll always have some cereal on hand.
  • Even if your apples do turn brown, they will still taste delicious.
  • Red and Golden Delicious are the sweetest apples. If you like something a little more tart, try the Fuji variety.
  • Store your cereal in the refrigerator.
