This project consists of producing a ONE PAGE, 8 1/2" by 11" One Sided "Savings Sheet". This is an easy money making project if you are familiar with desktop publishing/word. You can easily make $1600 in about a week! You will sell "business card" size ads on a single sheet of paper that will be distributed by inserting the sheets into a local newpaper/publication.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A good desktop publishing system. I have been very successful with a standard word document, using text boxes to create my "coupons" on the page.
  • Visit Link In Resources (Bottom of Page) For More Ideas!

Step1
1. Preparation. There is just about a days worth of preparation to get this project started. The first two issues you will be faced with will be determining you overhead cost to print and insert your sheet; and then to create a "sample" of your Savings Sheet to show to potential advertisers.
Step2
CREATING YOUR TEMPLATE/SAMPLE SHEET
Open a new Word Document (or similar). Create your heading space. You will do this by inserting a text box at the very top of the page for you "Savings Sheet" heading. My last sheet was titled, "THE FALL SAVINGS SHEET" with a subtitle of "Discounts For ________ Residents" and maybe something about the type of offers (i.e. service providers).
2. You'll then need to insert your 8 text boxes for the advertisers coupons. The coupon boxes will be approx. 3 1/2" Wide by 2" Tall and will feature the BUSINESS NAME/LOGO on the first line; THE OFFER (20% Off) on line 2; TERMS OF OFFER on line 3 (i.e. orders over $50; PHONE # on line 4; and ADDRESS on line 5. This should be the layout of each coupon. You don't want to start adding too much info to each ad, or they will get looked over. THE EASIER TO READ, THE BETTER.
Step3
DETERMINING OVERHEAD
You will begin by contacting your local newspaper and publications (this is how you will be doing your distribution) and find out who offers the lowest price for inserts. You will need to ask the number of publications they can insert into and how often. You will want your inserts to preferably go out Wednesday. This has worked very well for me in the past. My insert pricing may be a bit higher or lower than yours (I paid $40/week for 2000 inserts/week), so you will have to adjust your adverting price accordingly. Then you will determine the number of weeks you will do the insert (I did 4 consecutive weeks). From there you will know exactly what your cost of distribution will be.
You will then need printing prices. If you are going to follow my process, you will need 8,000 copies (2,000/4 weeks). Start by calling around to your local printers and get quotes (IN WRITING) from as many as possible. After you have collected quotes, and only AFTER, you will then talk to the owner/manager of the 2-3 companies offering the lowest printing prices about trade. You will offer them a prime spot on the sheet a ($249 Value) and have that amount taken off your total bill. I was able to get 8,000 copies printed for only $145 after my trade!
Step4
COST PER SPACE FOR ADVERTISING
Now you know what it will cost you to produce and distribute your Savings Sheet. At $249/advertising space, with 8 spaces, that will be $1992. From that you will subtract your insertion amount ($140 +/-) and printing costs ($145 +/-) and that will leave you with a total profit of around $1700, you should at a minimum be able to make $1600 even if insertion and printing costs are $200 EACH (After Print Trade).
Step5
Armed with all the necessary information, you can now begin the last step. You will start contacting any and all business owners and managers you know personally, this is the easiest place to start. Even if you only get one or two, this will help you later with cold calling because you will already have participating businesses (someone else thought it was a good idea). A key point for each advertiser is to offer a reasonable savings (more than 10% off) to receive the best response.
Explain to businesses that they will be getting high exposure because they will be a stand-alone insert in a well distributed publication, so their advertising WILL BE NOTICED!

Tips & Warnings

  • This is a very brief outline of how to accomplish this project, but it should get you started down a path to big profits. Also, you could produce these each week with different advertisers (or the same) in different publications.
  • Be sure to use dependable printers and publications. Check each week and MAKE SURE your sheets are being inserted! Pay for your printing when you pick up your Savings Sheets; pay for HALF your insertion costs upfront, and HALF when they have been completed (the end of four weeks).

on 1/6/2008 Absolutely! As long as you have businesses in your area, this will work! You may just need to start out with a smaller publication the first time, maybe 8-12 pages. You could even offer advertising to surrounding communities that offer services not availalble in your direct area!
