How to Be More Social as an Introvert

Everyone likes to be social, at least a little bit. Some people are extroverts and thrive on social interaction, but others are introverts and prefer a good book to a good party. Introverts may find it harder to go out and have a good time because it doesn't come naturally. With a bit of desire and diligence, though, even an introvert can come out of their shell, so to speak, and become more social.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Desire to be more social
  • Good friend or two (preferably more extroverted than you)
  • Will power

Step1
Ask for help from some friends. Pick some that are more social or extroverted than you, but try to avoid the ones who like to steal the spotlight. It will be harder for you to break out and leave an impression on people if your friend takes all the attention. These friends may be other introverts who want to be more social as well; you can support each other to help achieve your goal.
Step2
Determine in which type of social activities you'd prefer to engage. Bars and nightclubs, a group or club, a team or other type of physical activity are among your options. It all depends on your particular interests.
Step3
Be diligent. In the end, you're the only one you can truly rely on to help achieve your goal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try new things. You may surprise yourself and find out you like something you had discounted.
  • Don't give up if the first thing you try doesn't go well.
  • If nothing you try helps you feel more comfortable being social, you may want to consider talking to a doctor or therapist to determine if you have social anxiety or something else keeping you from enjoying yourself around others.
