How to Pick Environmentally Friendly Transportation

  1. Step 1

Assess your surroundings. If you live in the city you may be able to walk or ride your bike or take the train, rail or subway to work or to shop. If you live in the country, walking or riding a bike may not be feasible.

  2. Step 2

Consider sharing a vehicle. A car share program might even be in your area. This allows you to try out a hybrid or a car with better gas mileage without having to buy it. Most car share programs either charge a monthly fee or a fee based on the mileage.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a hybrid or a car that has better gas mileage. Consider your current car’s trade-in value and any offers that dealerships are advertising.

  4. Step 4

If you decide to purchase a hybrid, research how the car is manufactured. Due to the type of battery, nickel needs to be extracted from the Earth to create the battery. Compare the gas mileage to your current vehicle too.

  5. Step 5

Schedule carpooling days with friends or family members. This can be useful for yourself for work and errands or if you have children involved in extracurricular activities.

Tips & Warnings
  • Thoroughly assess your options by making a list of pros and cons.
  • Do not let car salespeople persuade you into making a decision the same day.
