How to Use Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy for Autism

Educate yourself. What is HBOT? The oxygen rich, high pressure atmosphere of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) stimulates the healing process in general but HBOT is being recommend by some doctors and new-age therapists as a treatment for a wide range of problems including autism.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is commonly known as the treatment used for deep-sea divers suffering from the bends. But research has found that hyperbaric oxygen has an important role in the treatment of brain injury, and perhaps also developmental disorders.

Learn through research. According to the Foundation for Autism Information and Research, Inc., "Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) refers to intermittent treatment of the entire body with 100-percent oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressures. Mild Hyperbarics (mHBOT) uses increased air pressure (instead of pure oxygen) to deliver additional oxygen to the bloodstream and tissues. Hyperbaric therapy is increasingly being used to realize benefits in children with Autism spectrum disorders because of its ability to deliver greater oxygen levels to the brain and vital organs and stimulate tissue regeneration. With autistic patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment has been known to improve verbal communication, direct eye contact, reasoning ability, motor skills, balance, attention and reduce aggressive behavior."

Some medical professionals and parents believe autism may be caused by a toxic level of mercury, a heavy metal along with aluminum and arsenic in the body. Autistic children have been found to have huge levels of heavy metals in their system. Heavy metals like to hide in the brain and interfere with neuron transmission. It seems logical then, that increasing the supply of oxygen to the brain could stimulate neural growth and repair. The oxygen hyperbaric chamber does just that.

Defeat Autism Now! (D.A.N.) has a link to providers or you can make an appointment through your pediatrician or medical insurance carrier. Sessions usually are not covered so be prepared to pay out of pocket; and it can be very expensive but what parent isn't willing to do all they can for their autistic child. Some couples were both people work jobs, have to have one salary go just to autism treatments.

The pods or chambers are comfortable and relaxed. You can even go in with your child and read a book to them during the process. Some are set up with video screens so you can watch a movie together during treatment as well. Children are put in the chamber for various lengths of time as a treatment for autism. Hyperbaric oxygen is natural oxygen, delivered in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure does not change the molecular composition of oxygen. The increased pressure just allows extra oxygen to get into tissues. There are no side-effects and the experience is not unpleasant for the child.

Tips & Warnings

  • Treatment can go on for months and court is still out regarding it's effectiveness but many parents of autistic children see an improvement in their child's behavior after repeated treatments. Actual medical evidence is uncertain of its benefits but many families think it's worth a try.
