Sinus and allergy season can be a misnomer. Some people suffer all year long with sinus congestion and allergies. For those looking for a natural approach to relief, a surprisingly simple and common herb can offer tremendous relief. Most people know of chamomile as a tea, but it is also a very potent decongestant if you if you prepare it as an "inhalation" remedy. Chamomile in its dried herbal state contains an active anti-inflammatory chemical called Bisabolol that works to open up your airways so you can breathe freely again. Read on to learn more.

From Quick Guide: Decongestant Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 lb. of bulk German chamomile flowers from the health food store (not tea bags)
  • A large heat-resistant bowl
  • 1 cup of water, brought to a boil
  • A medium-sized bath towel

How to Decongest Without Using a Decongestant

  1. Step 1

Take 2 large handfuls of the chamomile flowers and place them in your bowel.

  2. Step 2

Boil water separately and then add to the bowl with chamomile. Do not boil the Chamomile directly, as it will destroy the active ingredients.

  3. Step 3

Get comfortable in your favorite chair or couch and bend over the bowl to take deep inhalations of the steam mixture that is released. Place your bath towel over your head to concentrate the inhalation.

  4. Step 4

Take little breaks for fresh air, then return to the inhalation for a total of approximately 20 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to buy German Chamomile as opposed to American Chamomile, as it is standardized for effectiveness. American Chamomile is not regulated and therefore its effectiveness is unpredictable.
  • Try the remedy at night since Chamomile also has a relaxing, sedative effect.
  • People allergic to mugwort or ragweed should stay away from Chamomile. It can produce a similar allergic reaction.
  • Do not use while pregnant.
  • Always contact your doctor before experimenting with herbal remedies to see if there are any contraindications with medicines that you are taking.
