We all know that being a good listener is important in the workplace. The value to your career is priceless. Here are some ways to engage yourself to do more than just listen well.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Open mind
  • Open ears
  • Desire to learn

    Making It Personal

  1. Step 1

Give people their moment. When someone stops to speak with you in your office or cubicle, do not multi-task while appearing to listen. Stop typing or reading email, reviewing documents or answering the phone. Give them your complete attention.

  2. Step 2

Listen. Sounds easy and it isn't. When someone is talking with you, resist the urge to think about how you're going to respond to them and focus on what they are saying.

  3. Step 3

When you talk with people on your team, ask them about their family, school, what they did over the weekend or how their drive home was during the last storm. The idea is not to pry but to humanize the work day just a little bit.

  4. Step 4

If someone shares a significant upcoming event such as a graduation, promotion, vacation or family addition remember to ask them about it. A simple "How was France?" or "It must be great to have a daughter" opens the conversation for them to share what they are comfortable with.

  5. Step 5

Smile. We all get so busy with our day we forget that others notice our lack of outward happiness. This is especially important for those that manage people. You do not have to fake it. Just be conscious of the effect your mood has on others.

  6. Step 6

When you say the standard, "How are you" greeting to someone, wait for a reply. If you do not get one, ask for one. People will learn that you are someone who actually wants to know how they are doing!

  7. Step 7

When you visit someone's office or cubical, ask where they acquired their calendar, mug or other personal item. There may be a great story they are willing to share. You listen, you learn!

  8. Step 8

Share relevant articles or research papers with team members. Route once a week. This will assist the overall department. Give people the opportunity to "opt out" of they do not want to be on the distribution list.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that you'll connect better with some people than others.
  • You will be more aware of people the better you know them.
  • Do not be consumed with talking to everyone you know on the team.
