Secret Santas can be really helpful for people with large families or lots of mutual friends. It’s simply gathering a group together to draw names of a single person for whom to buy a holiday gift, rather than something for everyone. Buying presents can be expensive and this is a great way to stay on a budget. However, if family or friends are scattered, it is difficult to get together to draw names. Using an online service is the best solution for a long-distance Secret Santa.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit www.elfster.com. To begin a Secret Santa, you’ll have to register. After registering, you’ll have to verify your account via email. Once back to the site, select “Start a new exchange.”

  2. Step 2

The next page is a self-explanatory form. You’ll have to enter a name for the exchange, a sign-up deadline, a gift guideline (should everyone buy a book or exchange homemade gifts?) and a gift budget, instructions for the group, the exchange date and location.

  3. Step 3

On the next page, there is a list of the people in your group. Add people by entering their names and email addresses in the box provided on the left side of the page. Once the list is complete, select “Send Invitations.”

  4. Step 4

Group members will be notified of the event via email and how to answer the invitation.

  5. Step 5

To add items to your wishlist, click your own name. Select “view full profile” and then “wishlists.” You’ll be able to add or delete items and, if available, enter a website for the item. You can also enter things you do not need.

  6. Step 6

The day after the sign-up deadline, names will be drawn randomly. Members of the group will receive a link via email. When connected to the link, members will be informed of their draw. At the bottom left of that page, select “View Wishlist” to find out what that person does and does not want. Once on the wishlist page, you can submit a question (what’s her favorite color, what restaurants she prefers, and so on).

  7. Step 7

Buy the gift according to the Secret Santa guidelines and exchange on the designated date!
