How to Plan an Efficient Move

To stay competitive in today’s professional workplace, job candidates must be willing to relocate in order to move up the corporate ladder. Moving can be an overwhelming task, particularly if you have a family. However, it can be managed more efficiently if you first create a clear plan with goals and timelines to follow.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen and Paper
  • Computer and spreadsheet software
  • Stationary/postcards
  • All utility bills
  • Banking information
  • Address book
  • New utility contact information
  • New school contact information
  • Movers/packers information
  • Charitable organization
  • Cleaning service
  1. Step 1

    Using paper and pen or a spreadsheet, create a list of all of your current utilities and their contact information.

  2. Step 2

    Create a list of subscriptions and mail lists you wish to continue.

  3. Step 3

    Using the contact list and your address book, create postcards with your change of address information and determine a mailing date.

  4. Step 4

    In your spreadsheet/list, set a goal date to terminate each of your utilities.

  5. Step 5

    In your spreadsheet/list, set a goal date to connect utilities and enroll any children at your new place of residence.

  6. Step 6

    Add to your spreadsheet a deadline to contact your bank to transfer your information to your new location.

  7. Step 7

    Contact your movers/packers and schedule an appropriate date to engage their services. Be prepared to discard anything you do not wish them to pack.

  8. Step 8

    Contact a local charitable organization to donate any unwanted household items. Try to schedule donations before movers and packers arrive, to ensure items are not mistakenly included in the move.

  9. Step 9

    Schedule a cleaning service for your old residence the day after the movers are finished removing your household items.

  • Be sure to include local club and organization memberships in your contact list.
  • Many charitable organizations will pick up donated household items.
