Stained glass pie is a gelatin dessert from the fifties and sixties that still has mass appeal. Read on to learn how to make stained glass pie, a cool summer treat.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 box each red, yellow, blue, green and orange gelatin
  • 1 pint heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 can crushed pineapple
  • 2 cups crushed pretzels
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 box instant lemon pudding
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Mixing bowl
  • Hand mixer
  • Five cookie sheets
  • 1 9 by 12 inch oblong baking pan or Pyrex dish

    Mix it up!

  1. Step 1

Mix each package of gelatin separately, using 1/2 cup less water than recipe on box. This will make jiggly gelatin that can be picked up with the fingers. Pour each flavor of gelatin into a separate cookie sheet and allow to set and cool.

  2. Step 2

Cut cooled gelatin into cubes or triangles. Set aside.

  3. Step 3

Whip together the heavy cream and granulated sugar until peaks begin to form. Fold in crushed pineapple. Fold in lemon pudding mix. Carefully fold in gelatin cubes.

  4. Step 4

Mix together crushed pretzels, and brown sugar. Sprinkle into 9 by 12 inch baking pan.

  5. Step 5

Carefully fold gelatin mixture into pan without mixing up the pretzel coating on the bottom of the pan. Refrigerate for one hour to firm up your pie.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a more sophisticated version, use vodka, champagne, or sparkling grape juice instead of water to make the gelatin.
  • Do not serve alcohol based versions of this recipe to minors.
