Bellydance is an ancient Middle Eastern art form that has traveled through centuries and the world and has almost made its way into the mainstream. Classes are available in most cities, where even beginners can learn the seductive movements. One intermediate-level movement is called the "Maya" and can be broken down into several steps. Read on to learn how to maya in bellydance.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with both feet firmly planted on the floor. While bending the left knee slightly, pull the right hip straight up toward the sky. Your right heel might lift slightly off the ground.

  2. Step 2

Pull your right hip in a circular motion toward the right. Stretch the hip as far as you can, and bring it around to create a half circle in the air. As the hip comes down, you will need to bend your right knee. Expect your knees to alternate bending through the entire movement. Do this without twisting. Your hips should stay perpendicular to the ground.

  3. Step 3

When you reach the middle, begin to pull up on the left hip while slightly bending the right knee. Your torso should remain still. Only move the lower half of the body.

  4. Step 4

Pull the left hip out toward the left side as far as possible. Slowly bring the left hip around in a half circle, and back toward the middle as it lowers. You've completed your first maya.

Tips & Warnings
  • The maya movement creates an infinity sign with the hips, like a number eight on its side.
