make a DIY Craft Top Hat

Make this hat for your snowman or for New Years Eve or for Halloween or a kids play. This is a great DIY craft project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • large sheets of black craft foam
  • 2 feet of black ribbon
  • 2- 2" wide strips of purple card stock
  1. Step 1

On one of the purple strips of card stock, use blue glitter glue to write Happy New Year or the number of the New Year. Let dry completely. If this is for Halloween or a Costume Party skip this step.

  2. Step 2

To create the top hat, roll a full sheet of black craft foam into a cylinder and use hot glue to hold it. This will be the top of the hat and not the brim, so you can make it as tall or short as you want.

  3. Step 3

Stand black cylinder up on top of second black foam sheet. Draw a circle all the way around the cylinder about 2 inches out, to make the brim of the hat, if you want a bigger brim, draw the circle 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches out. Cut out circle on the second black foam sheet. This is the brim of your hat.

  4. Step 4

After you have your "donut" shaped hat brim, hot glue the top to the brim.

  5. Step 5

If a child will be wearing the hat then turn hat upside down and use hole punch to make two holes on the inside edge of the "donut". These holes are for the ribbon that will secure the hat to the child's head. Cut black ribbon in half to create two 12" pieces. Tie each piece through the punched holes.

  6. Step 6

Cut black ribbon in half to create two 12" pieces. Tie each piece through the punched holes.

  7. Step 7

Glue card stock strip with words or year number onto the front of the hat. Use second strip to complete the brim and trim if necessary.
