How to Prepare for the Postpartum Period

The postpartum period for families can really be a challenge. Things are usually chaotic for a while between the lack of sleep, diaper changes, feedings and visitors. The old saying, "a little preparation can go a long way," really is true when it comes to the postpartum period. Do your best to prepare before the baby comes so that you can relax more and heal well when you get home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Groceries
  • Family member or friend
  • Postpartum night doula
Step1
Go grocery shopping ahead of time. Stock up on all the foods that you typically enjoy and foods that are easy to cook such as soups. Get all the essential things like toilet paper, shampoo, soap and sanitary pads. You probably won't feel like going to the store at the least for the first week after you give birth.
Step2
Buy all essential baby items like diapers, baby rash cream (or use olive oil), a baby kit (with the aspirator, nail clippers, etc.), wipes, bottles and other practical items that you think you may use. It makes life much easier if the items you need are already within reach.
Step3
Prepare and cook between 10 and 20 meals, and freeze them. After you come home with the baby, your time will really be limited. It's very easy and practical to just take out a meal, let it thaw and put it in the microwave or oven to heat for dinner.
Step4
Wash and fold all laundry. When you get home, you probably will not have much time or energy to do dirty laundry. It will be much easier for you if this is done before the baby comes. If you are not able to do this before giving birth, have a relative or friend do it when you go into the hospital.
Step5
Talk to your family and friends about helping you through the postpartum period. It would be ideal to have a family member or friend come over every day or every other day for the first few weeks to help with daily chores and general baby care.
Step6
Hire a nighttime postpartum doula. A nighttime postpartum doula generally comes over in the evening and takes care of the baby throughout the night while you get your rest. She may also do light housework.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help.
  • Set up things at least three weeks before your due date.
  • Offer family and friends an incentive to help during your postpartum period.
  • Check the references of any professional that you hire.
