Transferring a domain name is easy . . . it's just information you don't need very often. This article demystifies the process of transferring domains from Red Register to eNom.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A domain registered at Red Register
  • Your login and password for your Red Register account
  • Login and password information for your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart (accounts are free at all three sites)
Step1
Verify that the domain name is eligible for transfer -- that is, that the name has been registered for at least 60 days, is not expired, and is not in Registrar Lock status.
Step2
Log on to your control panel at Red Register.

If you're a reseller, it's at http://storefront.redregister.com/reseller

If you're a customer, it's at http://storefront.redregister.com/reseller
Step3
Navigate to your list of domains.

For resellers, this is "Products" > "Search" > "Domain Registration Search"

For customers, it's "Domains" > "Search" > "Domain Registration Search"
Step4
Leave all text boxes blank, select "Within All", and click "Search".
Step5
Click the domain name you want to transfer.
Step6
To confirm that the contact information is correct -- Registrant and Administrative email addresses are especially important -- click "Modify Contact Details". Select a menu option under "Use your Existing Contact Database" or "Specify Contact Details", and follow the instructions in the interface.
Step7
To obtain the authorization code for the domain, return to your list of domain names.
Step8
Click the domain name you want to transfer, then click the link by the "Domain Secret" field.
Step9
Record the domain secret -- you'll need to supply it when you submit the domain transfer request.
Step10
To unlock the domain, return to the list of your domain names.
Step11
Click the domain name you want to transfer, and then click "Lock/Unlock".
Step12
Clear the locking check box and then click "Update".
Step13
Now you're ready to create the transfer request at eNom.
Step14
Log on to your account at eNom, eNomCentral, or YouStart.
Step15
In the "DOMAINS" menu, click "transfer a domain name".
Step16
Select "Auto verification" and click "next".
Step17
Type in the domain name you want to transfer, a comma, a space, and then the authorization code. If you have more domains, hit "Enter" and type in the information for the next domain on a new line. Repeat for each domain you're transferring, one per line.
Step18
Set the Registrar Lock, Auto-Renew, Whois, and Password options as you wish.
Step19
Click "next".
Step20
Click "submit".
Step21
When you (or the Whois contacts listed at Red Register) receive the email from eNom asking for approval of the transfer, do so by following the instructions in the email.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a few unscrupulous businesses that "hijack" names -- transfer unlocked domains to themselves, effectively stealing them. Once you unlock your name, it's advisable to submit the transfer request at eNom quickly, to reduce the time window for any potential hijackers.
  • Make sure the transfer email that you approve is eNom's, not from one of these hijackers!
