When you’re hungry while at work, do you find it easier to hit the vending machine or duck into the nearest donut shop to grab a quick snack? Do you have the kind of job where it’s hard to actually sit down and eat? If you’re ready to change your eating habits, or if you’re looking for a way to actually start to snack healthy, here’s a great starting point.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Food carrier or fanny pack
  • Insulated bottle
  • Ice pack
  • Plastic spoons, forks and knives
  • Healthy snacks
  • Commitment
  1. Step 1

Get the tools. You need a food carrier or one of those insulated six-pack can carriers. These do well because you can pack them full of good stuff. An ice pack is good to pack inside of the carrier depending on the length of time you’ll be out. (If you work in a place where you can refrigerate your food, you don't have to do this.) Insulated bottles come in all sizes and these are good for hot or cold foods, like chilled fruit or soups. Use plastic ware so you won’t have to cart home dirty forks and spoons.

  2. Step 2

Go shopping in advance. Here’s where part of the commitment kicks in. You must make time to do this. It’s easier to snack healthy if you already have the items on hand. Buy items such as fruit, granola bars, crackers, juice, yogurt, nuts and bagels.

  3. Step 3

Pack your food carrier. Don’t forget your plastic ware.

  4. Step 4

Pack a fanny pack. This is for those who have jobs where they move around a lot, or are outside, or stuck in one place, such as transit operators, mail carriers or utility workers. Stash a fanny pack with things you can eat by the handful--nuts, crackers or 100 or 150 calorie snack packs.

Tips & Warnings
  • It’s important to eat. Once you get into this healthy snacking habit, it will become very easy and routine. Eating regularly helps move food through your digestive system. It keeps the metabolism revved up. Those who don’t eat are more prone to weight gain than those who keep hunger at bay--with the right type of foods.
