Things You'll Need:
- Paper
- Pen or Pencil
- Snack and drink
- Advertisements
-
Step 1
Preparation
Whether you're shopping at a grocery store or a department store, you and your child need to be prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally. As much as we love to dress our adorable little ones, and ourselves be sure to wear shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather, and estimated time out. Discuss where you will be going, and why - keep it brief. Children lose interest when you start rambling. -
Step 2
Get the advertisements and start looking through them with your child. Have them circle the items you plan to buy (shapes). Briefly explain how much the item cost (numbers).
-
Step 3
Have your child make a list of "some" of the things you plan to purchase. They can either copy the letters they see, trace over them, or write them with a cut and past picture.(drawing, writing, alphabets, cut & paste) Make a seperate complete list for yourself.
-
Step 4
Arrive at the store and let your child know how excited you are that they will be helping you. Give them their list to begin. Have them match the picture on their list to the items they see. (same/different) Show them how sale/special items have colored tags or writing. (colors) Name the color with them to help them understand. Tell them how many to get. (counting) Ask you child if he is thirsty from walking. (physical)
-
Step 5
Take everything to the counter to be paid for. Explain why you're paying. (good vs bad) Let your child hear the counterperson tell you thank you for coming, and hear you respond. (manners)
-
Step 6
Reward them for being so helpful - but don't let them know it's a reward. Go get ice cream, a toy, or simply take them to the park. On your way home, look at your child and offer a great big smile and a I love you.
