Being a good free throw shooter is a vital part of playing the game of basketball. However, many people struggle from the line. Here is how you can increase your free throw percentage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Step up to the free throw line. From there, search for the nail in the hardwood floor that can be found on the free throw line. If you’re right-handed, place your right foot on the nail. Do so with your left foot if you are left-handed.

  2. Step 2

Once you have placed your foot on the nail, line up your shooting hand with the hoop.

  3. Step 3

Get into a routine at the free throw line. For example, you could bounce the ball three times before every free throw. This routine will help to alleviate the pressure of shooting a free throw.

  4. Step 4

Aim for the center of the square found on the backboard. There is no shame in banking in a free throw. The most important thing is to make the shot.

  5. Step 5

If you continue to struggle from the free throw line, try shooting them underhanded or “granny style.” This may not look pretty, but several studies have proven that shooting a free throw granny style actually improves your percentage from the charity stripe.

  6. Step 6

Practice, practice, practice. Anybody who’s every played organized basketball can tell you that the only way you’ll improve from the free throw line is by constant practice. You should shoot at least 100 free throws a day in order to improve.
