Nap time is one of the hardest parts of the day. Whether you're a parent at home or a childcare provider, it may be hard to get children to lay down for nap. Here is a way to smooth it out.
Child's favorite nap time item (pacifier or stuffed animal)
Step1
Give a 5-minute warning before it is nap time. This way children won't be caught off guard when nap time comes.
Step2
Start to play soothing music also about 5 minutes before nap time. This lets children know that it is time to calm down and also that nap time is coming soon.
Step3
Tell children when it is nap time.
Step4
Ask them to clean up and help them if you feel the need to.
Step5
Guide children to their mat or bed.
Step6
Ask them to lay down. It is helpful if you use a calming voice.
Step7
Cover children with their blanket and give them their favorite naptime item.
Tips & Warnings
You may need to repeat Step 6 several times if children continue to get up.
If this continues, try sitting by the child and rubbing his or her back.
If a child doesn't want to sleep, it's best if you let them lay quietly.
If they are not being disruptive to others it should be fine and they may eventually fall asleep.
Do not yell at children.
Not giving a five minute warning may cause problems during nap time.
Don't make exceptions. If you let one child get up and play during nap time, all the other children will want to do that also.
