It's the holiday season and everyone wants that perfect tree that stays green for as long as possible. If you treat your tree like a fresh bouquet of flowers, you'll have a longer-lasting, fresher tree for the Christmas holiday. The best way is to cut the bottom of the tree you pick out. Cutting off the bottom gives a fresh cut and helps remove the wood-clogged bottom of the original cut from the Christmas tree lot. The following tips will help make your tree last the longest this year.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand saw or chainsaw
  • Two sawhorses or picnic table
  1. Step 1

Bring your tree into your yard.

  2. Step 2

Set up sawhorses alongside tree, placing one near the top and one near the base of the tree.

  3. Step 3

Place tree on top of sawhorses.

  4. Step 4

With chainsaw or hand saw, saw off bottom of tree about 1 inch above bottom of stump.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place tree in water-filled stand. A freshly cut tree can soak in a gallon of water in its first 24 hours!
  • Keep tree watered.
  • If you don't have a chainsaw or hand saw, ask the Christmas tree lot staff if they can make a fresh cut for you before you leave the lot. Sometimes they will oblige, or charge you a minimal fee.
