Step 1
At the base of Mt. Sopris in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley rests the artsy town of Carbondale, host to the party of the year every July in downtown's Sopris Park.

Step 2
The weekend festival starts on Friday evening with the “Mother of All Drum Circles,” a community-wide collaboration of drums and musical instruments playing in harmony in the park.

Step 3
Play me some Mountain Fair music.In the three decades Mountain Fair has been raging in Carbondale, music has been the motivator for most people to check out the festival. Rock, reggae, bluegrass, world music, hip-hop and ska are examples of the musical stylings featured on the Mountain Fair stage year after year. Live music plays until 9 p.m. each night of the festival.

Step 4
Men’s and women’s wood-splitting competitions, a horseshoe tournament, and cake- and pie-baking contests are but a few of the events that make Mountain Fair a Colorado mountain town tradition. There’s also fire dancing performances at night and shows geared for kids during the day for all-around family friendliness.

Walk around Sopris Park during Mountain Fair and it’s hard to resist the mouth-watering fare from a variety of vendors. American, Mexican, Greek and Thai are a sampling of the international cuisine satisfying hungry Mountain Fair attendees each summer.

Art in motion.Check out artists booths featuring fantastic leather work, paintings, ceramics, hemp clothing, silver jewelry and pottery. Have a caricature drawing done; or, stop in for a palm reading or watch the artisans at work.
