What’s old is new again. At least that’s certainly the case when it comes to buying a vintage dress. As some of the best-dressed celebrities know, when you shop vintage you can often find a one-of-a-kind designer item. Vintage dresses are also so in style that you might actually look more modern in something from the past than you would if you wore something new right off a department store rack.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vintage dress
  • New shoes
  • Bangle bracelets
  • Clutch bag
  1. Step 1

Look in your phone and online to find vintage stores in your area.

  2. Step 2

Browse consignment shops and thrift stores that carry clothes. Also visit discount used clothing places like the Salvation Army.

  3. Step 3

Check out the racks of dresses in stores for something that catches your eye. Be on the lookout for classic styles, such as wrap dresses, strapless gowns and sleek A-lines.

  4. Step 4

Try on dresses you like with heels and a slip to get the full effect.

  5. Step 5

Determine which items have potential. Remember that they can be tailored to change the shape a little, or make them fit you better.

  6. Step 6

Imagine a dated dress without shoulder pads, with a more tapered and shorter skirt and with new buttons. All of these little alterations can make a big difference and won’t cost much to make.

  7. Step 7

Check for designer labels or labels from high-end stores to identify high-quality items. Even without a label, the seams and linings can give you a clue as to how well the item is made.

  8. Step 8

Buy dresses with nice cuts, quality fabrics and interesting patterns.

  9. Step 9

Plan to have the dress cleaned and pressed to make it look fresh before you wear it.

  10. Step 10

Pair a vintage dress with new shoes and accessories, such as bangle bracelets and a clutch bag, for a completely fresh and modern take.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do the rounds of tag sales in your area for clothing finds.
  • Keep an open mind, as many vintage dresses look better on.
  • Check magazines and online to get an idea of which vintage styles that are “in” again.
  • Don’t buy vintage clothing items without trying them on, as sizes ran smaller in the past than they do today.
